What do vitamin D and testicles have in common?

- At the Medical University of Graz, Austria, a 2010 study built on work with rodents, performing a study of testosterone levels of 2299 men. The found a significant correlation between intake of Vitamin D supplements and levels of all androgenic hormones, especially testosterone.
- Another study at Graz, this one in 2011, conducted randomized trials on 164 participants for one year. Those who took a Vitamin D supplement experienced a significant increase in testosterone levels; while the placebo control group showed no such change.
Short version: Vitamin-D increases testosterone.
More testosterone means better testicular and sexual health.
Though there are no sure things with sexual health, taking a Vitamin D supplement can directly improve the situation in one of the most influential factors on your sexual health.
Vitamin D is an Aromatase Inhibitor
Aromatase Inhibitor (n): a substance that inhibits the uptake of aromatase. Clear enough?
Sorry, here’s what you need to know about that sentence. Aromatase in an enzyme that converts testosterone to estrogen.
An inhibitor, in medical terms, is something that prevents a body process. SSRI medications are (Selective Serotonin Reuptake Inhibitors) that block reuptake of serotonin in brains that have serotonin reuptake issues.
Vitamin D does the same to aromatase, meaning it stops (or significantly reduces) transformation of testosterone to estrogen.
A recent study found that Vitamin D reduced expression of aromatase, and thus reduced transformation of testosterone to estrogen.
The study was conducted to examine the role of this process in breast cancer, and was done on rats — but the research team is confident enough that the findings can be generalized they are beginning research into human subjects.
Another study, this one at the Danish Cancer Society Research Center in Copenhagen, showed similar results.
Even low doses of a Vitamin D analog directly reduced aromatase function.
Again, this was performed toward cancer treatment, but the results are generalizable.
The mechanic they studied (reduction of aromatase by Vitamin D) happens consistently, no matter what type of cancer is being treated.
Taken together, these two studies plus the three above show a powerful one-two punch from Vitamin D to improve testicular and sexual health.
(1) You produce more testosterone.
(2) Your body converts less of it to estrogen. Like net profits anywhere else, this is good for your “testosterone bottom line.”
Vitamin D Improves Semen Quality
Anthropologists and fertility experts have known for decades that people in northern countries are less likely to conceive during the winter than in the summer.
In the past 10 years or so, science has paid more attention to the impact of sunlight exposure (and Vitamin-D) on general and sexual health.
Specifically, a 2008 Australian study found a correlation between Vitamin D insufficiency and infertility in both men and women.
Further research found “surprisingly good fertility outcomes” among men who underwent a course of treatment including increased Vitamin D intake.
Other research has determined that Vitamin-D is absolutely vital to tissue health in sperm cells. Without this nutrient, the nucleus can’t develop correctly.
A deficiency leads directly to lower sperm count and reduced sperm health, while studies have found an increase in sperm count and health in subjects given vitamin D.
