My Sperm is Like Yellow Jelly: Why?

Why is my sperm like yellow jelly?

This question or similar ones are not uncommon.

In fact, I receive messages like this quite often – which shows how many men are experiencing this yellowish, clumpy, jello-like sperm.

Typical semen is usually white or slightly grey.

However, yellow semen isn’t necessarily something to worry about.

Nonetheless, it could be a sign that there is an underlying medical condition.

So, let’s have a look at what can cause this…

Why is My Sperm Like Yellow Jelly?

To answer this question, below are a few things that could cause the color change.

But before you read them, please understand that this does not replace a checkup by a doctor. I recommend that you consult your doctor if your sperm doesn’t go back to normal in a timely manner.

Urine

Sometimes urine can sit in the urethra – that’s the tube that carries both urine and sperm out of your body.

Unsurprisingly, when this happens, the two can mix and make your semen appear yellowish.

This retention of urine can be caused by several factors:

  • An enlarged prostate (benign prostatic hyperplasia)
  • A bladder or prostate infection
  • A urinary tract infection

Jaundice

You may have heard of this term in relation to alcohol abuse.

This condition can turn your skin and the whites of your eyes yellow. It can make your sperm yellow.

Jaundice happens when a pigment known as bilirubin is overly present in the body.

The following things can cause Jaundice:

  • Hepatitis and other viruses
  • Alcohol abuse
  • Autoimmune diseases
  • Certain drugs
  • Metabolic defects
  • Gallstones
  • Gallbladder inflammation
  • Pancreatitis
  • Pancreatic cancer

Prostate Infection

If your semen is yellow with a slight greenish tint to it, you could have a prostate infection.

This type of infection is the result of bacteria from your urine making its way into your prostate.

The most common symptoms of prostate infection are:

  • Difficulty urinating (pain & high frequency)
  • Cloudy urine
  • Painful ejaculations
  • Pain in the penis area

STDs

Certain sexually transmitted diseases (STDs) such as chlamydia or gonorrhoea can cause a yellowish discharge from your penis.

So, if you see a discharge and yellowish semen, you may want to get tested for STDs. (source)

The following symptoms are common when experiencing gonorrhoea or chlamydia:

  • A burning sensation when urinating
  • Pain around and inside the penis
  • Uncontrollable itching
  • Frequent need to urinate

Warning: If left untreated, certain STDs can lead to leukocytospermia (see below). Moreover, if you suspect that your occasional or regular partner is infected, tell her or him ASAP.

Leukocytospermia

Don’t be scared by the name of this condition. It’s not a death sentence.

It’s the result of a high number of white blood cells in semen.

As a result, leukocytospermia (aka pyospermia) can cause your sperm to appear yellow.

Over time, it can lower the quality of your sperm. If left untreated, it can even decrease fertility. (source)

Leukocytospermia can be caused by:

  • Genital infections (e.g. gonorrhoea, herpes or chlamydia)
  • Autoimmune diseases
  • A narrowing of the urethra (aka urethra stricture)
  • A lack of regular ejaculations
  • Wide or dilated veins around the testes area
  • The use & abuse of tobacco, alcohol and weed
  • Other illnesses (so see your doctor!)

Other Factors That Cause Yellow Sperm

Your lifestyle may be a driving factor behind this change of color.

For example, alcohol and tobacco can temporarily cause sperm to appear yellow.

Men have also reported that certain foods high is sulphur (onions, garlic, chives) can cause a change in semen color.

Certain medicines can change the color of sperm too. If you take any, I recommend checking with your doctor.

Why is My Sperm Like Yellow Jelly: Conclusion

Yellow semen could be the result of any of the conditions mentioned above.

But this is not an exhaustive list. So, regardless of any similarities you may experience, it’s probably a good move to make an appointment with your doctor or urologist.

Don’t wait until matters get worse. If it’s been more than a week or two with no changes, get an appointment ASAP and explain your situation clearly.

In most cases, the treatment prescribed will be antibiotics or anti-inflammatory medication, In severe cases, the best fix might be surgery.

In other cases, the underlying condition will have to be treated (as with Jaundice).

Bottom line: do not panic.

Yellow sperm probably isn’t a big deal, but just in case, see your doctor!

Update – How to Improve Semen Quality

Like I said, there are a lot of reasons why your sperm might not be the way you want it to be.

Many of these causes are real medical issues that might require a doctor’s help to resolve.

However, many of the other causes are treatable using natural methods that only require some small diet or lifestyle changes.

These natural methods are all intended to raise your testosterone levels. You need to maintain healthy, optimal T levels in order to produce the best quality sperm possible.

I’ve written about this extensively here on this blog.

If you want to increase the size of your loads, check out my top tips here in this article.

Additionally, if your ejaculations are weak, these methods might help you.

Below are a few of my best ways to improve sperm quality and volume.

Cut Down Alcohol Intake

I already mentioned this above, but it’s worth going into a bit more detail.

Alcohol is a toxin and a depressant. That means it’s technically a poison for your body and it slows down various bodily functions (the cause of that drunken feeling).

It can also seriously wreck your testosterone levels.

Multiple scientific studies on humans have shown that heavy, regular alcohol consumption can significantly lower testosterone levels. (source, source, source)

With that said, while alcohol definitely isn’t good for you, you don’t need to cut it out completely.

A few drinks every once in a while is not really and issue. Just make sure you’re not binging heavily every other day.

Eat Organic Foods

Now, don’t get me wrong here – I’m not a militant organic type. You don’t need to overhaul your entire diet, but eating less produce from massive commercial farms can have big benefits.

The reason? Those large commercial farms heavily spray their crops with pesticides.

While not all pesticides are harmful, many of them are – and many of them can crush your testosterone levels. (source)

Here’s a study that, I think, really says it all.

This study compared conventional farmers (using pesticides) to organic farmers in Denmark, in order to evaluate any effects of pesticides on male sexual characteristics.

The researchers found that the conventional farmers had both lowered sperm production and lower testosterone levels than the organic farmers. (source)

Avoid Full-Fat Milk

If this seems oddly specific and strange, let me reassure you that there’s science to back this up.

Overall, milk is a good thing. The bad part about it is that most dairy cows are kept pregnant for nearly a year at a time, which raises the estrogen levels in the milk they produce.

Consumption of the milk from these cows has actually been proven to increase estrogen and lower testosterone levels in men. (source)

Why am I saying to only avoid full-fat milk? Those estrogenic compounds are mainly found in the fat portion of the milk.

Other studies have backed this up too.

One study found that men who drank full-fat milk saw their sperm quality decrease significantly. (source)

Another study confirmed that consuming low fat or skim milk actually improved sperm volume and mobility. (source)

So low fat and skim milk can actually help improve your sperm quality – but you should avoid full fat milk if possible.

Bonus – Supplement with Selenium

This often overlooked mineral has been shown to have some significant effects on sperm quality.

One study found that all semen parameters improved when subjects received a selenium supplement. (source)

Another study found a strong positive correlation between selenium and testosterone levels in males. (source)

Both of these studies were done on infertile males, so the effects might not be as significant in healthier men.

The best way to increase selenium in your diet is to eat this.
