Does Forskolin Work for More Testosterone & Lower Body Fat?
What is Forskolin?
Forskolin is an active ingredient found in the herb Coleus Forskohlii. A plant that belongs in the mint family and is mainly found in subtropical areas (i.e. Thailand & India).
The herb Coleus Forskohlii has been used for centuries in Ayurvedic and Chinese medicines to treat digestive issues, insomnia, muscle spasms, convulsions, skin disorders, asthma and, heart and lung diseases.
When it comes to supplements, you will either find a dried powder that comes from the roots of the plant and contains about 10% of forskolin. Or, forskolin extract, which is the molecule without the rest.
Both have the same effects but you will need larger doses of the herb to match the power of the extract.
Does the Scientific World Praise it?
Well, the scientific literature on Forskolin goes way back.
In 1978, a study was already showing that forskolin was efficient in lowering blood pressure in mammals. (1)
Far more recently, a study published in 2005 has shown that forskolin can accelerate fat loss and help retain muscle mass, boost testosterone levels and improve mood. (2)
Similarly, other studies can be found demonstrating the merits of this subtropical herb.
But…how does it work?

How does Forskolin Work?
In order to accelerate fat loss, improve muscle retention, testosterone levels and overall mood, forskolin increases the cellular levels of a compound called Cyclic Adenosine Monophosphate – cAMP for short. cAMP is a cellular messenger of sorts that is essential to many biochemical processes in the body.
For instance, when it comes to fat loss, cAMP stimulates the production of an hormone, responsible for the mobilization of fat stores.
Moreover, cAMP can raise the metabolic rate thanks to its interactions with another interesting compound: adenosine triphosphate.
Adenosine triphosphate – or ATP – is a very basic type of cellular energy and when it’s numerous, cAMP levels are quite low. Similarly, when cAMP levels are high, ATP is low and thus, the process of using fat stores for energy starts!
When it comes to the increase of testosterone, it is undoubtedly the result of fat loss. Weight loss in general, will increase levels of free testosterone. So, if you want to increase T, that’s how you get started… if you are overweight.
Also, the study published in 2005 that I mentioned above, showed an increase of 16 to 33% of testosterone compared to the placebo group, who experienced a decrease of T levels. (2)
Does Forskolin Work for More Testosterone & Lower Body Fat? – Conclusion
So, does forskolin work for more testosterone & lower body fat?
Well, the studies are encouraging but like I previously said, taking a supplement – let’s say forskolin – doesn’t replace exercise and diet.
Thus, should you want to try forskolin, I strongly encourage you to improve your diet and lifestyle to really get satisfying results.
What about dosage?
The available research shows that 50 mg per day is an effective dose of forskolin.
What will be the results?
Well, even if forskolin has been researched a bit, other factors may also influence the results. So, even if your mate didn’t have much success with it, it doesn’t mean you will too.
Concretely, here are the results you can expect with a supplementation of forskolin (and a good diet/exercise plan):
- Slightly accelerated fat loss
- Higher energy levels
- Improved muscle mass retention
- An increase of testosterone levels
- A slight lowering of hunger
Any side effects you should know about?
In some rare instances, a few people have experienced diarrhoea. In this case, you can either stop and/or limit caffeine intake.
Also, because of its blood pressure lowering properties, people who have low blood pressure or a kidney disease, should ask their doctor before taking this supplement.
If you are taking any other medication, check with your doc as well.
